I wish there was better advice than to remain hopeful and to make them so blatantly aware of the fact that you love them and that you are always there for them. I really believe eventually they will come to you and let you in and let you help.
Until then pray and converse with God and know that God is watching over your friend.
but I can't just sit and watch you waste away.

You can simply be there for them and be a great friend. Sadly, they have to want to get better :/.
It will all work out.
but it's hard to "be a great friend" by just sitting by and watching someone hurt themself. :(
